Captain's (b)Log... 1st Transmission

This blog was created for my Media Writing II class. I am assuming for the time being, just my class will be reading this blog. I will try my best to explain things clearly and provide enough information for you to understand it. The entries will primarily be about Red Sox baseball, but from time to time I may go off topic, like to MLB: The Show 09 , popular culture, or the economy, or even just random stuff that I think is funny.

The World Baseball Classic is currently being played and the US team is doing well, but I'm not happy about who is listed on the injured reserve chart. Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis are out of action, and it is a result of the of playing in the WBC. I'm enjoying the tournament, but injuries suck when it affects your favorite Major League team. I could care less if some guy playing for Chinese Taipei sprains his ankle, but when two franchise players (one of them being the AL MVP) are hurt, I'm a little worried about the start of the season. I understand injuries happen, but I feel like it affects MLB more than anyone around the world. Fans are getting upset because player injuries hurt their respective pro team's season, and they have expressed the opinion that the athletes are playing for no reason, instead of working towards winning a World Series Championship.

I'm still happy about the start of the season. Baseball is back and they have a new cable channel called the MLB Network. They have been airing every game of last year's World Series 24/7, but now I'm looking forward to their live Thursday night broadcasts of games I normally couldn't see. I want to see what (New) Yankee Stadium and Citi Field look like, and I want to see if the Rays will repeat last year's success. (Christ I hope not) I want to see a vintage Josh Beckett on the mound and I also want to see if John Smoltz still has the talent and ability when he returns. I hope Mike Lowell's hip is OK, and I hope Pedroia proves why he deserved to win MVP last year. He's an extremely good player and he is so popular, he even got the cover of the MLB 09: The Show video game.

Be Jealous!

So I have a lot of reasons to be excited about the new season, those just being a few of them. Another reason to be happy is NO TRIP TO JAPAN! The Sox played the A's last year, and because of jet lag and what-not, they were in a bit of a funk the first few games. This year, won't happen. They start at home against the Tampa Bay Rays. I'll be at the 4/9 game and it's my first time going to Fenway Park, so it should be pretty exciting.

There's not really much else to say considering it's spring training. The Red Sox are playing the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. (I rooted for them in the World Series last year, but I'm over that. Now the city of Philadelphia will most likely cry, bitch and moan about the Eagles for the next 25 years.) The season gets underway on April 5th with Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN, and there are 13 games on Monday.
